Páteo Alfacinha was created in 1981 by Vitor Seijo, a passionate and knowledgeable connoisseur of Lisbon, where he built his dream by revitalizing a wasteland and restoring an noble area of the city.

Páteo Alfacinha – The origin of the name

The exuberant architectural ensemble far exceeds the idea of a typical Lisbon patio, an enclosed area surrounded by poor houses. More than a patio, it is a neighborhood, an alley, a narrow street, a square, a corner, and, above all, a viewpoint, a chosen spot in this city of viewpoints, a city born looking at the harbor, the quay of longing, the cove of history. More than a patio, it is a fair: an open fair of friendship would perhaps suit it well. But this is the right name. Patio in the very intimate and suggestive sense of the heart of the house, a place opposite the street, an intimate place of neighborhood, human warmth, simplicity, and friendliness. And “Alfacinha”, evidently. For those who don’t know, the term is a kind of green synonym for a Lisbon native, but it is more than that. Whatever the origin of the term (let’s not try to uncover such mysteries!), “Alfacinha” expresses a certain tender and gentle state of mind, speaks of good people, is a murmur of “how good it is to be here,” recalls golden slopes at sunset, pink mists at dawn. And that is the reason for the name, because that is what Páteo Alfacinha aims to be: an open area, a twilight sheltering cordiality, a time for meeting and togetherness.

Páteo Alfacinha – The location

Rua do Guarda-Jóias is in itself a letter of recommendation. It was here that he lived, the palace employee, whose loyalty was the very essence of his profession. Kings and queens trusted him with the crown treasures, the symbols of royalty, diadems, scepters, necklaces, chests with sparkling jewels. The jeweler lived here and, with the disappearance of the function, the name of the place remained. And here is another possible name for this house: the jeweler’s chest. Because what we intend to keep in this place are indeed jewels: the jewels of fidelity, loyalty, clear camaraderie, genuine flavor, enduring friendship, memorable togetherness, flames of human feelings that in our restless time give meaning to life. To store such treasures, what better place than Rua do Guarda Jóias? Difficult place to find? On the contrary. If you leave Terreiro do Paço and go straight ahead - Cais do Sodré, Santos, Alcântara, until you reach Belém. Then turn right and go up the Ajuda hill to near the palace. Take Travessa das Florindas and you will be on Rua do Guarda-Jóias.

No need to ask; the unmistakable silhouette of Páteo Alfacinha is there before your eyes. It's your house. Please come in.
